A: An Ignition Interlock Device is a device that prevents the vehicle from starting if the driver has alcohol in their breath.

Q: How does the Ignition Interlock Device work and why do I need one?

A: The driver first blows into the handset, which is connected to the vehicle starter. An alcohol-specific sensor then analyses the breath sample and provides a reading of how much alcohol is present. If there is no alcohol present in the breath sample, the engine can be started.

You will need an Ignition Interlock Device installed into your vehicle if you intend on driving after a DUI conviction.

Q: Are there any standards to ensure that Ignition Interlock Devices are accurate and reliable?

A: USA NHTSA - Vol. 57 No. 67/ 1992 State Regulations (various)

For more information about the standards, please contact your local service provider.

Q: I got a DUI conviction. Who should I contact/what are the next steps I need to take?

A: If you were convicted of a DUI, you should first contact a lawyer. The lawyer will provide you with information for the next steps to take. If you are convicted of a DUI, you will have other options that will be available after a court hearing.

Q: Will the unit lose all its memory if the battery is disconnected?

A: No, the memory will not be lost even when the battery is disconnected; all memory is stored on the device.

Q: Can others operate my vehicle while an Ignition Interlock Device is installed?

A: Yes, other people can operate your vehicle, but they would have to use the vehicle and device as it is set up.

Q: Will the requirements to take a “running retest” cause me to take my eyes off the road, creating a hazardous situation?

A: You would be instructed to pullover and complete a running retest in a safe location.
